The dawn of Oscar nomination morning is almost upon us, and amidst some ongoing plans to make my friends threaten me until I produce some real writing, here’s my long, long, long longlists for my cinematic favorites of 2025 in all categories.     Love these long lists, Nick! Your placing Nina Hoss in the lead category made me reconsider my own placement. Although she doesn’t have as much screen time as Thompson, she is so central to her film’s plot and so influential in shaping our ideas and feelings about Hedda that she may just warrant lead status. I’d argue you could write the same about Dunst in Roofman, whom I definitely have in lead (and probably as my winner).

      Thank you Braulio! Putting Hoss in lead made sense the longer I sat with Hedda, and after reading the play, though I wonder if it’d change on a different day. She and her dress are the parts that have stuck with me most, so that might be part of it. I wonder if the supporting campaign for Hoss would fly if Loveborg was played by a man. Dunst was always Supporting to me – I feel like she enters the film much later than Hoss, and she’s never really a POV character. It’s all filtered through Tatum. You’re not the first person I’ve heard call her a lead, so I’ll let you know what changes if/when I rewatch it.
